Do you have a fear of heights? Does walking into a small space freak you out? Well, you are not alone. Fears and phobias are more common than you think.
A user asked the forum, “What is your phobia?”
The answers were varied and interesting.
DEEP OPEN WATER

“You know when you’re swimming, and suddenly the ocean floor no longer exists? That.”
“Thalassophobia. I have that too, though TBH, I’m not sure why it’s classed as a phobia. A phobia is irrational, but I think it’s perfectly rational because it’s terrifying. I can handle swimming pools, but open water like lakes and the ocean get a hard pass from me.”
UNCOVERED WINDOWS

“I genuinely get afraid that one day I’ll wake up and see somebody staring at me through one.”
MAGGOTS

“I hate any kind of worm-like creature. But maggots REALLY freak me out. I’m getting goosebumps just thinking about the nasty little worms.”
DRAINAGE GRATES IN PARKING LOTS

“This is a pretty weak one. I find myself desperately clutching my keys/phone/whatever is in my hands when walking over or near water drainage grates in parking lots. They feel like they just want to swallow whatever I’m holding.”
THROWING UP

“My wife drank too much last night, ended up with a bad hangover, and threw up multiple times this morning. It’s not like she was ultimately better, but she was doing much better than before.
I just sat there like, does she not know she can bury her face into a pillow and suffer for 16 hours? That’s my go-to hangover cure. It’s miserable, but at least I don’t puke.”
HEIGHTS

I fear heights, except if I’m up high in an enclosed space, it’s no problem. I can fly in airplanes, travel to the observation deck of the St. Louis arch, etc., and I’m perfectly fine.”
BLOOD TESTS

“Getting my blood drawn is hell. It’s not even needles; it’s just the whole idea of something leaving my body that’s so essential for my life is anxiety-inducing. I hate the tourniquet and how it makes me go numb. That makes me anxious too. I hate them looking for a vein while going numb; it makes me anxious how they touch my arm that way. I’m getting numb thinking about it.”
FAILURE

“It’s an actual phobia that stops you from doing things because you’re convinced you’ll fail. It’s one way to lead a small life.”
SMALL BIRDS

“I’m afraid of small birds. It’s not as bad anymore, but when I was a kid, they would terrify me to the point I would beg my parents not to sit on the patio at the restaurant.”
FROGS

“Sticky frogs, tree frogs, toads, rain forest frogs, anything that resembles a frog.
Get them away from me. I’m aware they’re harmless, I’m aware some people find them cute, I would never harm a frog, but keep them away from me.
A friend in high school found this out and threw a tree frog at me when I was 17. I went into such a flurry I legit hit him In the face and proceeded to low-key beat his ass.
Luckily he forgave me, and we’re still friends to this day, and I’m embarrassed I did that, but that’s how much frogs freak me out.”
BEES

“I once fell out of a tree after hitting my head on a bees nest; they were very angry.”
STYROFOAM

Styrofoam, of all things. Anytime I hear the sound of it or come into contact with it, my immediate reaction is to get away and leave the room.”
EYEBALLS

“When I was in elementary, my friend would chase me around with her eyelids flipped. I absolutely cannot do anything involving eyeballs doing things eyeballs should not naturally be doing.”
SWIMMING AROUND SEAWEED

“Not a phobia, more an aversion, but I can’t go in the sea if there’s any seaweed floating around unless I’m in a full-body suit. The sensation of seaweed brushing against my skin makes my skin crawl.”
ALLIGATORS/CROCODILES

“I had my first nightmare as a kid being eaten by one. The idea of one death rolling me is horrific; I can’t watch videos or scary movies with them in it.”
