WHAT IS THE BACKSTORY?

A 34-year-old woman (OP) lives with her husband (37M) and daughter (7F). OP and her daughter recently went on a short trip out of state while her husband stayed home to work. He was supposed to look after their dog, Ellie.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

On the last day of their trip, OP and her daughter received a call from OP’s husband, who was acting distraught. He told them that their dog, Ellie, had run away and that he could not find her. He claimed that she had bolted away from him in the park into some bushes, and he had been unable to find her.

HERE COMES THE PROBLEM

Their dog, Ellie, was a relatively small mini poodle mix and almost 13 years old. She was still active, but running away from them was unlike her. OP was suspicious, but she chose to believe her husband. She and her daughter were grief-stricken but didn’t want to blame him.

OP’S HUSBAND WASN’T SAD ABOUT LOSING ELLIE

OP’s husband seemed surprisingly okay, unlike them. Ever since the pandemic, he had started working from home, and he had always been annoyed at how much attention they gave their dog, Ellie. He hated how Ellie begged to sit on their laps while he worked.

ELLIE WAS RESCUED FROM NEIGHBORING STATE

A few days later, OP picked up the phone on their landline, which they rarely used. It was the contact on the microchip for their dog, Ellie. The caller was from an animal rescue in a neighboring state, quite far from them. They said that they had found Ellie and that she was safe.

HOW DID OP’S HUSBAND REACT?

OP told her husband the good news, but his reaction felt blunt and insincere. She asked him why he thought someone would steal and abandon Ellie, but his explanation didn’t make sense.

“That’s great, I’m so happy,” OP’s husband said when she told him Ellie had been found. But his tone was flat, and his eyes didn’t meet hers.

OP was left feeling confused and uneasy. She didn’t believe her husband’s reaction made sense but didn’t know what else to think.

OP DECIDED TO CHECK HER HUSBAND’S CAR DASHCAM

While her husband was out drinking with his buddies, OP copied the videos from his dashcam for the days she was away. She was shocked that he had taken Ellie far out of state and dropped her in front of his car. He threw a frisbee-like object into a field, yelled “fetch,” and drove without her.

OP was devastated. She couldn’t believe her husband would do something cruel to their beloved dog.

OP CONFRONTED THE HUSBAND

OP was livid and confronted her husband. He muttered something stupid about how he dropped Ellie off in a field so she could find a farm and have a better life. The next day, he got angry at OP for viewing his dashcam and called her and their daughter idiots.

Still shocked by the incident, OP asked in a forum if she was right in checking her husband’s dashcam video. Here are the responses she got!

LEAVE YOUR HUSBAND

“Keep your dog and daughter and leave the husband in another state to find another family he’d have a better life with.”

NEVER TRUST YOUR HUSBAND AGAIN

“You had a gut feeling and were correct. This is horrible. What your husband did is sick and cruel. He left an innocent animal to die. What you do now is up to you. But if it were me, I would never be able to trust him again. The entire relationship would be ruined.”

TAKE A DIVORCE

“I would straight up divorce him… my dogs are my family. Then he turns around and gets mad and calls you names. That’s the same tactic that cheaters use when their significant other finds something—trying the ol’ uno reverse on you.”

RETHINK OF YOUR RELATIONSHIP

“He called a 7-year-old stupid? What’s she got to do with any of this? Is she his kid? Because if not, you should probably rethink your relationship. I call my kids ahs…but not because they ARE…they do ah things sometimes because they’re feral. Also, he’s jealous of a 13-year-old dog.”

THE HUSBAND IS SCARY

“What a horrible action, terrifying stuff to be so abusive and callous toward a living creature, and then the elaborate lies. You picked up on signs of deception and then confirmed them with evidence. Even if he were innocent, driving records hardly deserve as much privacy as phone records. The husband is scary.
