With the advancement in technology, our lives have become much more convenient. Unfortunately, some valuable skills we learned during our lifetime have also become absolute thanks to technology.
A user asked the forum, “What skills do you have that are now obsolete?”
Here are the top responses.
GRAPHIC DESIGNING BY HAND

“I can do graphic design layout by hand. That means using dry-transfer letters and figuring out the size, kerning, and leading on paper. Work is done with a T-square, steel ruler, 6h pencils, eraser shield, X-acto knife, non-photo blue pencils, and hot wax.
I can also ink and paint an acetate animation cel using an Acme registration system.”
DRAFTING THEATER BLUEPRINTS BY HAND

“I can draft theater blueprints and paint elevations by hand. All digital now.”
DOING LAYOUTS BY HAND FOR A NATIONAL MONTHLY

“I used to do the layouts by hand for a national monthly where I was an assistant editor. I would write and print out the text on a word processor. Then, trim and place them on the sheet with hot wax (up to 36 pages). Then deliver to the press in downtown LA, always in the middle of the night because I made changes right until press time.”
REMEMBERING PHONE NUMBERS

“I knew a sales guy, and this was his gimmick. It was impressive but ultimately pointless.
PHONE PHREAKING

“Hackers of the phones back in the 80s and 90s. Among other things, they figured out ways to make calls for free from payphones or home phones, especially when long-distance calling was costly.”
WRITING IN CURSIVE

“I still write in cursive, and people always lose their minds.”
“Excellent for passing notes to my wife in front of our preteen. She’s clueless about the code.”
CHANGING A TYPEWRITER RIBBON

“Ever change a typewriter ribbon? I used to be real good at that.”
LONG DIVISION

“You’ve just made me realize how I’ve completely forgotten how to do long division. Did them all the time at school but wouldn’t know where to start now.”
DEPOSITING A PHYSICAL CHECK

“My 22-year-old coworker needed us to teach her how to deposit a physical check and write a check.”
DEVELOPING FILM IN THE DARKROOM

“Developing B&W and color film and prints in a darkroom. Probably one of the last photojournalism major students that had this requirement.”
SHORTHAND

“If you really remember it, it can be a cool code that only a few people know so you can send secret messages.”
CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF FLOPPY DISKS

“I was once great at the care and maintenance of 5″ and 3.5″ floppy disks. Also, I could fix scratched CDs pretty well, too.”
READING PHYSICAL STREET MAPS

“I was good at navigating a city by quickly looking at a street map for a minute and getting the lay of the land.”
MORSE CODE

“I had to learn it in the army. If I hadn’t, I’d have been a cook or infantry soldier instead of communications. I never used it in the army except to pass the course.”
PROGRAMMING IN COBOL

“I learned COBOL in college. I was told it would be in high demand. They scrapped it from the curriculum a semester after I graduated and revamped the degree.”
