15 Hobbies That Can Help You Achieve Financial Security, Whether You Lose Your Job or Not

Sharing is caring!

If you feel trapped in a never-ending cycle of work and stress, you may dream of a life where you can do what you love for a living. A user asked on the forum, “If you could quit your job and pursue your hobby full-time with financial security, what hobby would you pursue?”

Here the some of the most interesting responses.

BEING HAPPY

“I’m actually retired and living on a modest pension, debt, and mortgage free, so I am now able to pursue my hobby of being happy.

(I discovered a few years ago that my ‘ambition,’ as written in my high school yearbook, was to be happy.)

I happily read the latest news every morning while sipping my freshly brewed coffee.

I happily cook, bake, try new recipes, and eat food that isn’t processed. I happily started taking art classes and learning about sketching, acrylics, and watercolors. I happily wake up without an alarm clock, which means ‘when I’ve had enough sleep’…

I happily embrace each day and feel grateful that I found and reached this point in my life.

I soon realized once I retired that my ambition was the go back to what my dreams and aspirations were when I was a kid and in elementary school, before ‘life’ and ‘puberty’ and ‘peer pressure’ sent me veering off to an unfulfilling, empty, bottomless path. Still appreciate hitting near the bottom because it now makes me appreciate what I’ve now got.

Life is good. I love my life.”

OPENING A BBQ SHACK

“I’d probably move to the mountains and open a BBQ shack. Like literally a bare-bones place that operates in the summer only. Maybe some canopies for people to eat under, but that’d be about it.”

WOODWORKING

“It is a very useful skill. You could craft stuff for yourself, redecorate your house, try to be innovative and create something new, make gifts to everyone you like.”

GROWING PEPPER

“Growing hundreds of pepper varieties. I started growing a few plants and have slowly added to the amount every summer. I get geeky about growth and getting maximum growth without using chemicals. I would love to have a small farm and just work it daily.”

WRITING

“I would love to write all day, every day. It would give me time to make something that wasn’t a steaming pile of garbage.”

TRAVEL

“I would just travel anywhere and everywhere. I would love to spend a year or more living in a place and then move on. I would also spend a lot of time near or on the ocean so I can scuba dive.”

BECOME A RACE CAR DRIVER

“No hobby is more financially insecure, so assuming that is taken care of… I can’t imagine anything better. As Steve McQueen said, Racing is life, everything before or after is just waiting.”

OPEN AN ART GALLERY/PATISSERIE

“I’d open an art gallery/patisserie. I’d buy and sell local artwork. Talk about art all day. Eat macarons. Bake croissants. I’d die happy, for sure.”

OPEN A BAR/CAFE/BAKERY

“I want a bar/cafe/bakery where my customers can drink drinks or scotch with their pastries. Just like in Portugal. I loved that place; I could order a glass of rum, beer, and a pastry and just sit reading a book or looking at people walking by.”

OWN A FARM

“I’d love to start my own little farm and sell stuff at a Farmer’s Market every weekend.”

FARMING

“We have a bit of land with our house now, been able to use some of the free space to grow Potatoes, Peas, Rhubarb, Raspberries, and Zucchini.

I grew up in a farming town, working in fields and in greenhouses.

I’d like nothing more than to go back into a quieter homesteading lifestyle vs. the humdrum and tediousness of city life.”

START A USED BOOKSTORE

“Collect rare/out-of-print books, learn how to restore/re-bind the really old ones, and sell them along with regularly used books. There will probably be an espresso machine, comfy couches and chairs, and a friendly dog.”

BECOME A BLACKSMITH

“I’ll become a blacksmith. I love the idea of making swords, axes, armor, and all sort of cool stuff. Also, I would love to open a restaurant. Both would be great.”

START A CAT RESCUE

“I’d start a cat rescue. I could spend my life petting cats and ensuring they get good homes.”

GO TO SCHOOL FOREVER

“I’d go to school forever. Pursue any type of degree I want, any kind of class I want, forever. Learn all about science, math, literature, and language. I want to know all without the stress of having to worry about grades and assignment deadlines, although I would try to complete them all. If that gets boring, I will attend a trade school and learn carpentry, welding, metalworking, and auto mechanics. By the time that gets boring, getting back into a classroom would probably sound fun again.”

BEEKEEPING
